 Sewer Backup

What should I do if I experience a sewer backup?
During the hours of 7:00 to 4:00 Monday through Friday, contact the Baraboo Utility Department at 355-2740 and the Utility crew will determine where the problem lies and who is responsible. The City is responsible for any blockage in the sewer main itself, the property owner is responsible for the line from the home to the main sewer line, including the connection. If a problem occurs after 4:00 or on a weekend, please contact the Baraboo Police Department at 356-4895.
Coping with Sewer Backups

What should I do about the mess caused by a sewer backup?
In most cases, the City is not responsible for a sewer backup. You may want to ask your insurance company the possibility of obtaining a sewer backup rider on your policy.  You may also want to check with a local plumber regarding the installation of a backflow valve.  However, in the event of a sewer back, you should immediately arrange for the cleanup of your property:

  • Take before-and-after photos of the affected area.
  • Itemize any property losses.
  • Wet-vacuum or remove spillage.
  • Mop the floors and wipe walls with soap and disinfectant.
  • Flush out and disinfect plumbing fixtures.
  • Steam clean or remove carpet and drapes.
  • Repair or remove wallboard or wall covering.
  • Clean up appliances or ductwork.
